OVERVIEW

RTI Laboratories, Inc. – A Brief History

  • 1920:  Detrex Corporatation establishes an analytical laboratory in Detroit, Michigan to support its chemical operations.

  • 1965:  Operations move to suburban Redford.

  • 1981:  Detrex hires Jerry Singh as a chemist.  His career advanced steadily through various lab assignments to become the Technical Director in 1989 and ultimately General Manager in 1991.

  • 1986:  Detrex, utilizing their existing laboratory operation, establishes Research Technology International and diversifies as a commercial operation to service clients beyond their own chemical facilities.

  • 1991:  Research Technology International relocates to the current facility in Livonia, Michigan

  • 1993:  Research Technology is accredited per ISO 17025 by the American Association of Independent Laboratories (A2LA) in the fields of chemical and mechanical testing.

  • 1999:  Laboratory operations are acquired by its General Manager, Jerry Singh, and is renamed RTI Laboratories, Inc., a Michigan Corporation.

  • 1999: RTI qualifies as a certified Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) by Michigan Minority Business Development Council.

  • 2000: Laboratory is accredited for environmental testing by the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Council (NELAC).  RTI was only four labs in the area to be accredited in the first round of NELAC credentialing.

  • 2003:  RTI certified by the U.S. Small Business Administration as SBA 8(a)/SDB.

  •  2003:  A major remodeling of the Livonia facility begins in November, incorporating the latest concepts in efficient laboratory design.

  • 2004:  In February, RTI Laboratories acquires AAC Trinity, a diversified environmental analysis operation tracing roots back to 1952, one of the three other local NELAC accredited labs. The acquisition almost doubled the revenue, employment and instrument capabilities of the organization.

  • 2005  In January, RTI Laboratories, Inc. acquires Huron Valley Laboratories, Inc. (HVLI) of Romulus, Michigan.  HVLI was one of the two other remaining NELAC accredited laboratories.

With this acquisition, three of the four originally accredited NELAC labs in the area are now consolidated and operating under the RTI banner.

The combined operations now rank as the largest environmental laboratory in southeastern Michigan, one of the largest in the Midwest, and one of the top 10 minority owned laboratories in the nation.

The combined experience of the RTI, AAC Trinity and Huron Valley staff and management presents one of the most comprehensive collections of analytical talent in the Michigan environmental laboratory industry.

And the heart of it all…

...our Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to track sample status, workload, generate management reports and client reports. This system is networked utilizing Microsoft 2003 Advanced Server software.  The main Dell server is fully redundant (processors, hard drives and power supplies) for maximized reliability and security.  The network supports over 40 Pentium-class terminals throughout the various departments of the laboratories, providing supervisors and managers with up to date information on sample flow, analyses status and "due date". The system also provides analysts with real-time data on work order sample holding times.  Manual transcription errors are virtually eliminated by direct import of both sample analysis data and quality assurance results from the instruments to the LIMS.

In the Company’s continuing efforts to maintain a position as an environmental steward, we have recently established our unique online reporting system to reduce and potentially eliminate the need for hardcopy reports and the inherent delay in transmitting the same.  The “Flashpoint” online system provides clients with immediate notification of sample receipt and workorder completion.  With this notification the client can access the secure website and download files ranging from COC scans, report pdf’s, invoices and standard or custom electronic data deliverables (EDDs).
